Born in Keelung, TM Li is a sound artist, musician, sound designer and DJ based in Taipei. She earned her master degree in Graduate Institute of Philosophy, National Tsinghua University.  

 

1. Social Activism and Cultural Cultivation ( 2006-2015)

 

From 2006-2015, TM Li engaged in cultural cultivation in the areas of labour movement, gender, migration families, mental patients, and anti-nuclear movement, by means of street protests, publicity and formulation, organisations of rallies, as well as music workshops. She conducted music workshops to facilitate minority groups to create and perform their own music. Since 2011, she has turned to a more decentralized, “cultural guerilla” approach of activism, and took part in such cultural actions as “Electronic Music for No-Nuke”, “City Guerilla Party”, “Party is Party”.

 

2. Sound Design for Experimental Theatre ( 2013- )

 

As a Sound Designer for Theatre and Dance, she collaborates with a number of major theatre companies in Taiwan, covering subject matters with local and social concerns, stories of the minorities, and the archives and re-interpretations of the historical and cultural Taiwan. In theatre, she attempts to revive the aural, spatial and structural features of sounds in opposing to the use of sounds being merely a narrative device. She was in search of more innovative ways to build the sensory experience of listening beyond words and the usual signification systems. Recent collaborators include: L'Enfant S. Physical Theatre, Mauvais Chausson Dance Theatre, Assign Theatre and Performosa Theatre, etc.. The works explore the White Terror, the traditional Taiwanese funeral songs, gay rights, environmental issues, and the politics of Japan and Korea. Since 2017, she has been exploring also sound-based installation and performance that built solely around sounds.

 

3. Experimental Electronic Music ( 2014- )

 

She started to be active in underground electronic music scene in Taiwan since 2014. Besides DJ at Korner and other independent music festivals, she also does live performing. Best known for the experimental techno/house/ambient music. In 2017, she set up a duo with percussionist H-T Liao to combine experimental electronic music with percussion. The group’s debut album was nominated Best Album in Electronic Music and Best Single in Electronic Music in Golden Indie Music Awards.
